St. Katharina was the church of a commander of the Ballei Koblenz of the Teutonic Order in Cologne .

history

Mercator 1571

In addition to the Ballei Koblenz, the Ballei Altenbiesen ( Maastricht ) also had a commander in Cologne, Jungebiesen . The Koblenzer Balllei in the city goes back to an oratory consecrated to St. Catherine by Archbishop Engelbert I von Berg in 1219, which was built by the magistrate near the parish church of St. Johann Baptist . At this prayer house, a hospital for religious service was built by the Cologne citizen Heinrich Halverogge. Since the foundation was located in the parish of the Severinsstift , a legal dispute arose which was settled in 1219/20. The agreement shows that the hospital was in the hands of the Teutonic Order.

In the period that followed, the settlement developed into considerable wealth and reputation, property and patronage rights. Opposite the old chapel, a new Katharinenkirche was built in the second half of the 13th century, where the Carmelites took over the service in 1421. The church was expanded considerably by the middle of the 15th century and since then has consisted of a three-aisled, vaulted four-bay nave of 12 by 17 m and a two-bay choir room of 6.5 by 9 m, which had a 3/8 end. There was a large late Gothic roof turret on the nave. The Commander's House, the Brothers House and the commander's farm buildings were located south of the church. The hospital was abandoned in the 15th century.

In 1802 the repeal of the Coming took place and in 1807/08 the resignation of the Katharinenkirche. The last remnants of the building of the Kommende itself were partially still standing until 1912. The street An Sankt Katharinen is a reminder of the order's settlement .
