The German-speaking Medical Society for Paraplegiology e. V. (DMGP) is a multi-professional, non-profit medical association that serves the cooperation of all professional groups involved in the treatment and rehabilitation of people with paraplegia. The focus is on promoting and perceiving scientific and practical issues in the case of injuries, illnesses and all other damage to the spinal cord.

The DMGP is a member of the Working Group of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany. V. (AWMF), section of the German Society for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery e. V. (DGOU), affiliated society of the International Society for Spinal Cord Injury (ISCoS) and founding member of the Bundesverband NeuroRehabilitation e. V. (BNR).

tasks

The DMGP defines its tasks primarily as the dissemination of knowledge about the comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation of people with paraplegia. The company is also committed to promoting further training for all groups involved in the field of paraplegia, as well as promoting the exchange of ideas and experiences with domestic and foreign societies that deal with issues of paraplegia.

Since 1997 there has been a close collaboration with the International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS), previously the International Medical Society of Paraplegia (IMSOP). Since 2016 there has been the possibility of a combined membership ISCoS / DMGP. The DMGP has been able to certify advanced training in paraplegiology since 2017 and nursing has been offering certified advanced training in nursing paraplegiology since then.

Scientific work on issues of paraplegia is funded, and the company also financially supports research projects in the field of paraplegiology. Furthermore, the DMGP develops recommendations in those areas of paraplegiology in which it has special treatment competence and distinguishes people who have made special contributions to the comprehensive rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injury. The Ludwig Guttmann Prize of the DMGP is awarded for excellent scientific work in the field of comprehensive rehabilitation of paraplegics and the associated research, as well as the Friedrich Wilhelm Meinecke Memorial Prize for the two best abstracts at the annual conference. The DMGP is organized in working groups (doctors, ventilation, bowel management, EMSCI, occupational therapy, speech therapy, neuro-urology, nursing, physiotherapy, psychology, sports therapy and social services), each of which has a seat on the extended board through a scientific advisory board. The working groups as well as the DMGP comment on scientific questions about paraplegia and work on a topic-specific or professional-group basis. In addition, there is a guideline as well as an education and certification committee and working groups are set up for specific issues.

Members of the DMGP

Ordinary members of the DMGP can be natural persons who are professionally active in the field of treating people with spinal cord injury and who support and promote the goals of society. Legal persons who, by law, deal with the rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injury can become associate members. Individuals who are to be specially honored can be appointed as corresponding members or honorary members. All natural and legal persons and other associations under public and private law that support the goals of the company can become supporting members.

Organs of society

The organs of the society are the annual general meeting within the framework of the annual scientific conference, the board of directors with chairman, deputy chairman, past president, first secretary, second secretary and treasurer as well as the advisory board, which advises the board on all matters of the society.
