DeviceNet

DeviceNet is a CAN- based fieldbus that is mainly used in automation technology. DeviceNet was developed by Allen-Bradley (part of Rockwell Automation ) and later passed on to the ODVA (Open DeviceNet Vendor Association) as an open standard . DeviceNet is mainly used in the USA and also in Asia. In Europe, DeviceNet could not hold its own against Profibus or CANopen .

Number of network nodes

A maximum of 64 network nodes per fieldbus segment. With almost all DeviceNet devices on the market, the node address (0 to 63) can be set using a rotary switch or DIP switch on the device. However, the specification also provides the option of configuring the node address via the bus. Some devices have a special switch position for this, which is labeled with P or PGM.

Baud rates

Three different baud rates can be selected: 125 kBaud, 250 kBaud and 500 kBaud. With almost all DeviceNet devices on the market, the baud rate can be set using a rotary switch or DIP switch on the device.

Common Industrial Protocol

On the lower layers (1 to 4) of the OSI model, DeviceNet essentially uses the CAN specifications with some additional restrictions / additions. So are z. B. With DeviceNet, not all baud rates known from CAN are permitted. On the upper layers (5 to 7) DeviceNet uses the " Common Industrial Protocol " (CIP for short) defined by the ODVA . DeviceNet is the implementation of CIP on the basis of CAN. CIP is also used for the EtherNet / IP fieldbus (Ethernet / IP is the implementation of CIP on the basis of Ethernet ).
