The Diaoyu Fortress or Diaoyucheng ( Chinese  釣魚城  /  钓鱼城 , Pinyin Diàoyúchéng ) is one of the largest ancient battlefields in China. It is located on Diaoyu Mountain in Heyang City, Hechuan District , Chongqing . The fortress is famous for its resistance to the Mongol armies in the second half of the Song Dynasty . One of the most notable events was the death of the Mongol leader Möngke Khan near the city, which caused the immediate withdrawal of the Mongol troops from Syria and East Asia, whose leaders were to meet to elect a successor. This prevented the expansion of the Mongol Empire into Asia Minor and Europe.

Although the Mongols and the Southern Song were united in their struggle to crush the Jurchen - Jin dynasty , their pact broke immediately afterwards and the Mongols launched an aggressive war against the stubborn Southern Song dynasty that spanned more than a third of the 13th century lasted. From 1243 to 1279, Diaoyu saw more than two hundred military confrontations in a period of "sustained resistance" that lasted thirty-six years.

Ancient Diaoyu covers an area of 2.94 square kilometers. It is located on a hill surrounded by water on three sides. It is located about five kilometers east of Hechuan, Chongqing, near the confluence of the Qu, Fu, and Jialing Rivers . The terrain is steep and the landscape is impressive. About 900 years ago, Yu Jian built a fortress here to withstand the Mongols during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127–1279).

Although the Mongolian army was more than ten thousand men in size and was led by the Great Khan Möngke, they could not conquer the tiny fortress. Yu Jian achieved many brilliant victories, culminating in the death of Möngke Khan. According to some sources, Möngke was wounded by a cannon explosion in Diaoyu and died on August 11, 1259. However, some reports speak of an accident or illness. Since the area contains many historical sites - a naval port, drilling sites, watchtowers and a fortress with built-in cannons - Diaoyu has been declared an important national cultural and historical site by the Chinese State Council .
