The first edition of the Freie Zeitung appeared on April 14, 1917 in Bern. The publication with the subtitle "Independent organ for democratic politics" appeared twice a week until 1920.

Hugo Ball , who first worked as an author and then as a publishing director, was one of the staff of the publication .

The newspaper published articles and a. by Ernst Bloch , Auguste Forel , Ivan Goll , Carl Albert Loosli and Claire Goll .

In 1918 an almanac appeared in the Freie Zeitung 1917–1918 with selected articles from the years 1917 and 1918, edited and introduced by Hugo Ball.

The newspaper included "Der Freie Verlag". In a self-promotion in the mentioned almanac, its purpose is described as follows:

The publisher sees its task in making works by outstanding authors in German and foreign languages ​​in the original and in translations accessible to the wider public at low prices. With this he hopes to contribute to international understanding and political emancipation.
