The hazel rod

The hazel rod is the last of the ten children's legends in the appendix to the children's and house tales by the Brothers Grimm (KHM 210). There the title The Hazel Rod was written .

Mary fetches strawberries from the forest for her sleeping baby Jesus. As she bends down towards the bush, an adder comes and chases her. Maria hides behind a hazel bush, then fetches the strawberries and decides that since then, hazel branches have protected them from earth animals.

origin

From the 6th edition (1850), the legend of Mary and the explanatory saga are included as children's legend No. 10, based on Franz Josef Vonbun's folk tales from Vorarlberg (1847).
