The Marriage of Lieutenant Laré (French Le Mariage du Lieutenant Laré ) is a novella by Guy de Maupassant . It first appeared in La Mosaique in 1877 .

During the Franco-Prussian War , Lieutenant Laré captured 2 pieces of artillery from a Prussian artillery unit and was awarded the Legion of Honor for this. In the deepest frost, his troops are ordered to march to Blainville . On the way they come across an old man and his young daughter. You are on the run from Prussian Uhlans. When the girl no longer has enough strength to move on, the soldiers build a sedan chair for her, wrap it in their uniform coats and wear it despite the extreme weather conditions. They arrive in the French camp, which is attacked by Prussian units shortly afterwards. These are repulsed. Lieutenant Laré learns that the young woman they have saved is the daughter of Count de Ronfi-Quédissac. He marries her a year later. She brings a dowry of 600,000 francs into the marriage.
