The purple cloud
The purple cloud (original title: The Purple Cloud ) is a science fiction novel by the English author Matthew Phipps Shiel (1865-1947). In the novel, first published in 1901, Shiel describes how a purple volcanic gas destroys all of humanity. Only the young doctor Adam Jeffson survived because he was on an expedition to the North Pole at the time of the disaster. The Purple Cloud is considered a landmark of early British science fiction.
The novel served as a template for the end-of-time film Die Welt, das Fleisch und der Teufel, made in 1959 .
