The bad night watch is a fairy tale . It is in Ludwig Bechstein's New German Fairy Tale Book at position 14 and comes from Joseph and Ignaz Zingerle 's children's and household fairy tales from southern Germany from 1854 (title: The landlady ).

An innkeeper cheats a lot. A gentleman wants someone to watch his door at night and offers over a hundred guilders. The waitress refuses, because she sleeps at night, but tells the landlady. She greedily responds to it. In the morning her empty skin sits there with the money, the rest is with the devil.
