The unequal children of Eve

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The unequal children of Eve is a fairy tale ( ATU 758). In the Grimm Brothers ' children's and house tales from the 5th edition from 1843 onwards, it is at position 180 (KHM 180) and goes back to Hans Sachs ' rhyme shift The unequal children of Eve from 1558.

content

Adam and Eve, who were expelled from Paradise, have to work hard and have many children, beautiful and ugly. When an angel announces God's visit, Eve cleans the house, admonishes her beautiful children, but hides the ugly ones. God blesses the children, declares them nobles and scholars. She also picks up the ugly ones. But they get simple jobs. She doesn't understand. God declares that all classes are needed to feed one another.

origin

Wilhelm Grimm revised the version published by Jacob Grimms in the Zeitschrift für deutsches Altertum in 1842, which goes back to Hans Sachs ' Reimschwank of 1558. The story had spread widely after Philipp Melanchthon's publication in 1539 and was originally translated from Italian sources by Johannes Agricola in 1528 and Christianized. The declaration of the origin of the estates justifies them in the Lutheran sense (cf. 1 Cor 12 : 4). The previous fairy tale KHM 179 The goose-girl at the fountain alludes to it in the final movement.
