A service compartment is a special carriage compartment in a train that is specially set up for business purposes or is kept free for staff.

In escorted freight trains, the service compartment is usually located in a service coach or baggage car attached to the train . In passenger trains it is either at the front, in the middle or at the end of the train.

If permanent service compartments are to be set up in trains, these are often to be found in car types that only appear once on a train. For example, the service compartment for the IC2000 compositions is in the AD car. With the Railjet , the Infopoint is a special form of a service compartment. This is set up for direct customer contact and offers no possibility of retreat, only lockable boxes for the personal belongings of the staff.

The service compartment in the sleeping or couchette car is also one of the service compartments.
