Dictations
Diktys , ( Greek Δίκτυς , the net man ) is in Greek mythology a fisherman on the island of Seriphos and brother of the king Polydectes , who is chosen by Perseus to be his successor.
This happens because Diktys on the one hand saved Perseus and his mother Danae from the box (or ark ) when she was washed ashore on Seriphos and took them both in, and on the other hand because he was in the absence of Perseus - the latter had offered himself, Polydectes to bring the head of the Gorgon Medusa - had protected Danae from the stalking of his brother.
Karl Kerényi brings the two dissimilar brothers - or half-brothers through their common mother - into a close relationship, because Polydektes is “the recipient of a lot”. What one fishes out of the sea, the other gets. In the case of Danaë, however, Diktys opposes - and is ultimately exalted by Perseus.
