Dillo is a small and fast free web browser that was written in the programming language C ++ and partly in C using FLTK (from version 2.0; formerly GTK + 1) and implements HTTP and HTTPS (with an additional configuration switch). Dillo can be used on many operating systems. Mainly these are Unix derivatives . There is no official version of Dillo for Windows . However, it was ported to Windows: Dillo-Win32 . There is also an older SourceForge project with a Windows port Dillo for Windows . This project has not been further developed since 2003. In 2011 Dillo was also ported for DOS : Dillo for DOS .

Features

Dillo's binary file is only around 350 KiB in size (compared to over 30 MiB in Mozilla Firefox ). Therefore, some restrictions have to be accepted: CSS is implemented from version 2.1, but there is no support for the positioning of objects (floating), which is why many websites look unusual. Furthermore, neither JavaScript nor other active elements, such as B. Java applets , and the frames support only exists in a very rudimentary form in the form of a list of links to the individual frames. Netscape plugins, such as Adobe Flash , are not supported, but there is a patch that adds support for Gnash , a free implementation of Flash. Dillo has a bookmark manager that uses text files to manage the links. Dillo also has an integrated download manager with a progress indicator. Cookies are also supported and can be activated fully or according to white (page-related) or black lists.

Due to its small size, Dillo is often the main browser in smaller GNU / Linux distributions such as Damn Small Linux or DeLi Linux . In some distributions for single-board computers such as the Raspberry Pi , Dillo is one of the browsers installed by default due to the comparatively low performance of the hardware.

history

Dillo was created on the basis of the browsers gzilla and Armadillo. The name is also derived from the latter. Version 0.8.6 of the browser was released in April 2006. On February 25, 2007, the development of Dillo was frozen for the time being due to a lack of development capacities. In October 2008, however, the new, even leaner version 2.0 was released with a user interface based on FLTK 2 and support for tabs. On September 6, 2011, Dillo 3.0 was released, using FLTK1.3 as FLTK2 was downgraded to an experimental alpha version .
