Diogo de Silves

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Diogo de Silves was a Portuguese navigator and explorer of the 15th century who discovered the Azores island of Santa Maria and most likely São Miguel on the way back from Madeira in 1427 .

Little is known about his identity. Its nickname suggests its origins in the town of Silves in the Algarve , especially since some of the first discoverers came from this region. His name was recorded on a map from 1439 by the Catalan Gabriel de Valsequa .
