The dipterology is a branch of Entomology (entomology), which deals with the Diptera tackles (Diptera). Dipterology endeavors to expand knowledge of this group of animals through collecting, observation and experimentation. In addition to the identification, initial description and systematic classification of these animals, their morphological , anatomical and physiological properties are also examined. These play an essential role as the basis for other sciences, for example for medicine, where the two-winged species are particularly important as carriers of diseases and parasites . The two-winged animals and their stages of development also play a special role in forensic entomology , because they can provide information about the time of death, for example.

The people involved in this science are called dipterologists. One of the founders of dipterology was Johann Wilhelm Meigen (1764–1845).
