Direct molding material milling

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Direct molding material milling is a process that has been used since 1999 for the machining of solid molding material blocks in casting production. So-called 3D CAD data sets are used as the basis for programming the CNC milling machine. As a result, the sand molds are machined to a tenth of a millimeter by a CNC milling machine, so that the contours are more precise than with other methods (e.g. using model making ). By using 3D CAD data sets, which can also be constructed from conventional 2D drawings, it is possible to produce cast parts without the usually associated construction of a model. The way of modelless production of cast parts brings enormous time and cost advantages , especially in the area of individual parts / prototypes and small series production. Since "direct molding material milling" results in lost shapes and not permanent shapes, this process is not suitable for series production, since the cost advantage is no longer given there. "Direct molding material milling" can be used for any size of cast part and is one of the rapid prototyping processes.
