Direct connection (traffic)
A direct connection is a direct connection between two points ( point to point ) or places ( from A to B ). In the transport sector it is the alternative and the counterpart to the hub-and-spoke concept. (See also transport network structure .)
air traffic
The direct connection in air traffic is based on the assumption that many points on earth are not approached via a large aviation hub - a hub - but that many direct flights, also from smaller airports, are offered to many airports in order to transfer traffic via large hubs avoid what is also known as hub bypassing .
The opposite is the hub-and-spoke process, it is based on at least one large hub per airline from which all destinations are served. This airport is "fed" with feeders .
Land transport
In land transport, direct connections are usually called shuttles , and depending on the mode of transport, also shuttle buses or shuttle trains . These are used when there is very high demand for transport between two locations. This can be the case temporarily, such as at major events between parking lots and the event site, or permanently, such as in freight traffic between two production sites.
