The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (ger .: General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, GATT) 1947 raises forth in its preamble that the elimination of discrimination in the field of international trade aimed ( "elimination of discriminatory treatment in international commerce" ). Non-discrimination is referred to as a rule in the text of the contract (“Rule of Non-discrimination”).

The World Trade Organization (Engl. World Trade Organization, WTO) provides non-discriminatory (World) Trade ( "Trade without discrimination") as one of the most important to be aimed principles of the (world) trade ( "Principles of the trading system").

The German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology emphasizes that the principle of most-favored nation treatment is intended to rule out any kind of discrimination between individual WTO members and other WTO members. The principle of national treatment is intended to prevent types of discrimination against foreign goods and services compared to domestic products - for example through the application of internal taxes and legal provisions.
