Distributed Computing Environment

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Distributed Computing Environment ( DCE ) is an industry standard for distributed applications.

When the networking of heterogeneous, non-uniform computer systems increased in the early 1990s, the Open Software Foundation presented a concept for the architecture of distributed computer systems . Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) offers a range of services and tools such as security services or directory services .

DCE is based on three principles:

With DCE, a big step was taken towards standardizing the architecture, which was previously manufacturer-specific. However, the concept of implementing software for different platforms was abandoned after a short time. Similar to the OSI model , DCE was not granted any success, but the underlying concepts have prevailed.

In the meantime, the Open Group has placed its DCE implementation under the LGPL , but still offers a license for developers of proprietary software.

General overview

When Distributed Computing ( English for distributed computing , even Decentralized computing or distributed computing ) refers to an organized technique, distributed in the individual processes one on different computers running application (a computer program) a common result calculated.
