The national division (chess) 1998/99 was the top division of the Luxembourg team championship in chess.
Gambit Bonnevoie became champion for the fourth time in a row . Bissen and the second team Gambit Bonnevoie were promoted from the Promotion d'honneur. Both climbers occupied the relegation places, Bonnevoies second team was spared relegation, however, since their own third team ended up in the Promotion d'honneur on a promotion place. For the reported team squad see team squad of the national division (chess) 1998/99 .
The tournament was divided into a preliminary round and a final round. The eight participating teams first played a simple round-robin tournament . The first four played for the title in Poule Haute , the last four in Poule Basse against relegation. The total of the team points (1 point for a win, 0.5 points for a draw, 0 points for a defeat), then the number of board points (1 point for a win, 0.5 points for a draw) decided the placement , 0 points for a loss). For the final placement, both the points from the preliminary round and the points from the final round were taken into account.
Game dates
The competitions were held on October 18 and 25, November 8 and 22, December 13, 1998, January 10 and 24, February 28, March 14 and 28, 1999.
Bonnevoie went into the finals one point ahead of Echternach; and after Echternach lost to Dudelange, Bonnevoies' title defense was practically perfect.
After the preliminary round, Bonnevoie's second team was beaten in last place and could only ensure that their own third team would secure the starting place (which also happened). The other three teams were close together, and it was only in the last round that the decision against Bissen was made in a direct comparison between Dommeldange-Beggen and Bissen.
