Michael Wiedenkeller (born January 10, 1963 ) is a Swedish - Luxembourg chess player . He played for the Swedish Chess Federation until July 2010 and since then for the Fédération luxembourgeoise des échecs .

In 1990 he won the Swedish individual championship. In addition, this year he was awarded the Schackgideon , a once a year award from the Swedish Chess Federation, which is named after Gideon Ståhlberg .

The Stockholm resident has been working for Skandinaviska Enskilda banks in Luxembourg since the late 1990s .

Chess career

Individual tournaments

In 1977 Michael Wiedenkeller became Swedish Junior Champion (U20) in Stockholm. In 1983 he won the 11th Växjö chess tournament with a 2.5 point lead . For the Swedish national team he took part in the Nordic Chess Cup 1985 in Pohja , Finland . The tournament was won by Sweden, while Wiedenkeller also received an individual gold medal for his score of 5 points in 7 games on the third board. In 1985/86 he won the Rilton Cup in Stockholm ahead of Ralf Åkesson , and in 1986/87 he was fourth there with the same number of points as the winner Juan Manuel Bellón López . He won the Swedish individual championship in Gothenburg in 1990 . He won the tournament for the Luxembourg individual championship in Differdange in 2009 and in Schifflingen in 2010 , but did not receive the title because he was still registered for the Swedish Chess Federation at the time of the championships. In 2012, 2013 and 2019, Wiedenkeller was Luxembourg champion . In April 2014 he won the Zone Tournament of small nations in Larnaca before Igor Efimov and Oscar de la Riva Aguado . Wiedenkeller qualified for the 2015 World Chess Cup in Baku , where he lost 2-0 to Levon Aronjan in the first round .

Team tournaments

He played team chess in Germany for the SG Turm Trier . In Luxembourg he played for the Gambit Bonnevoie club from 1997 to 2003 , with whom he took part in the European Club Cup in Neum in 1998 and 2000 (on the top board in 2000) and was Luxembourg team champion in 1998 , 1999 , 2000 , 2001 , 2002 and 2003 . His club has been De Sprénger Echternach since 2004 , for whom he, also on the first board, at the European Club Cup 2005 in Saint-Vincent , in 2009 on the second board behind Robert Hübner in Ohrid , in 2013 also on the second board behind Alberto David in Rhodes and in 2015 played on the first board in Skopje and became Luxembourg team champion in 2005 , 2006 , 2009 , 2011 , 2013 , 2015 , 2016 , 2018 and 2019 . In Sweden he plays for SK Rockaden Stockholm , with whom he played in 1978/80 , 1981/82 , 1983/84 , 1984/85 , 1985/86 , 1991/92 , 1992/93 , 1993/94 , 2003/04 , 2004 / 05 and 2013/14 won the Swedish team championship. With SK Rockaden Stockholm he took part in the European Club Cup in 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1993 and reached the semifinals in Moscow in 1986 .

At the Chess Olympiads 2010 in Khanty-Mansiysk , 2012 in Istanbul and 2014 in Tromsø , he took part on the top board for the Luxembourg national team.

Title and rating

Michael Wiedenkeller has held the title of International Master since 1984 . He has topped the Luxembourg Elo ranking since September 2012.
