Divot

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Divot is a term used in golf . Pieces of grass can be knocked out of the lawn during a golf swing. Both this piece of grass and the damaged area are called a divot. It is part of etiquette to carefully insert the piece that has been knocked out. Without replacing it, other players' balls could later remain in a depression. That would make it difficult to hit the ball properly.

The term originally comes from Scottish and stands for a thin piece of sod that was used, among other things, for roofing.
