Location of Dixie Station in the South China Sea off Vietnam

Dixie Station was a United States Navy designated point in the South China Sea . Similar to Yankee Station north of Dixie, the US Navy aircraft carriers launched attacks on Vietnam during the Vietnam War, beginning in May 1965 . Since Dixie flew to destinations in South Vietnam , the term was chosen after the nickname of the southern states , analogously also Yankee for attacks on North Vietnam .

Dixie station was on 11 ° N, 110 ° E coordinates: 11 ° 0 '0 "  N , 110 ° 0' 0"  O before Cam Rank Bay . Since the US concentrated its attacks on the north, Dixie was only occupied by one porter, which usually just began the mission. This should get the crew used to military service for up to 30 days without having to fulfill the more demanding assignment at Yankee Station. It was abandoned in 1966 when US forces limited their bombing to northern Vietnam.
