The Dochart Viaduct is a railway bridge in the Scottish town of Killin in the Stirling Council Area . In 1979 the building was included in the Scottish list of monuments as an individual monument, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 1996.
history
The Dochart Viaduct was built as part of the Callander – Oban railway between 1883 and 1885 and opened on April 1, 1886 when the line opened. John Best's construction company carried out the work. The Dochart Viaduct is the second oldest concrete bridge in the United Kingdom after the Falls of Cruachan Railway Viaduct . The concrete consists of a mixture of five parts cement and one part crushed stone material. With the closure of the railway line on September 28, 1965, the viaduct became obsolete.
description
The 11.3 m high and 74.1 m long arch bridge is located on the eastern edge of Killin. It spans the Dochart near the Falls of Dochart with five segmental arches running diagonally to the direction of flow over the Dochart with clear widths between 9.1 m and 12.9 m. The location was chosen to give travelers a view of the Falls of Dochart and thus stimulate tourism in Killin. Externally, the viaduct is partly clad with stone.
