Dagger knife pattern 1917

The dagger knife pattern 1917 , often also called dagger knife M17 or combat knife 1917 , is a combat knife developed during the First World War . The weapon was used by the soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian joint army for close combat .

History and background

In the course of the First World War it turned out that the traditional equipment of the soldiers only partially matched the requirements of the trench warfare. This point in the war had been massively underestimated in all army commandments. A handy stabbing weapon was needed in close combat. In contrast to the German army leadership, the leadership of the Austro-Hungarian joint army was interested in standardizing the combat knife. The construction of the knife was ideally suited for close combat as well as for various work. The knife was an extremely popular booty weapon among Italian soldiers, as they had no comparable combat knife.

The 1917 Dagger Knife Pattern was made by a variety of manufacturers from across the country. In the armies of the successor states of Austria-Hungary, the knife was partially used until the 1940s. The dagger knife was also the model for the Italian combat knives and led to the construction of the Arditidolch .
