Rowing boat with gunwales and oarlocks

The gunwale (also Sielbord ) is the reinforced upper edge of an open boat, z. B. a rowing boat or a sailing dinghy . It lies on the inside of the boat on the frames at the level of the top plank and forms the upper end of the ship's side . In the gunwale can checkers or semi-circular notches ( Rundseln ) may be provided, which as a bearing for the belts are used. In modern sports rowing boats, however, the oarlocks are not mounted on the gunwale, but on outriggers .

The term gunwale is made up of oarlock and board . The latter term generally refers to both the upper edge of a ship and its interior.
