from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Donald Alexander Bruce (born before 1977) is a British-American civil engineer specializing in geotechnical engineering .

Bruce studied geology and mineralogy at the University of Aberdeen with a bachelor's degree and received his PhD as a civil engineer in geotechnical engineering with GS Littlejohn (with a dissertation on rock bolts). From 1977 he was an engineer at Colcrete in England, including in a joint venture with Keller Grundbau and Rodio at the Tarbela dam on the Indus in Pakistan (1979/80). He then rose to management at Colcrete and was in Hong Kong in 1982/83 (deep excavations, chemical soil improvement for railway tunnels, etc.). From 1982 to 1986 he was responsible for geotechnical engineering at Colcrete's headquarters in Weatherby. From 1986 he was technical director at Nicholson Construction in Pittsburgh, which transferred the soil improvement processes of the Italian Rodio Group to the North American market. In 1991 he became vice president. From 2000 to 2008 he was director of Soldata in Rockville, Maryland (a French company specializing in real-time geotechnical data display) and was partner of a rock anchor company (SBMA LLC) from 2001 to 2008. In 1996 he founded his engineering company Geosystems LP in Pittsburgh (until 2000 Eco Geosystems Inc.), of which he is president.

He is an expert in soil reinforcement (deep mixing) and other methods of soil improvement , soil anchoring and rock anchors and micropiles . For example, he was involved in repair and securing projects for large dams and dams.

In 2015 he gave the Terzaghi Lecture (The Great Leap Theory in Specialty Geotechnical Construction). He also received the Martin S. Kapp Award Winner of the Geotechnical Engineering Section of the ASCE in 1998 and the Wallace Hayward Baker Award Winner 2004.
