Doratura stylata is a dwarf cicada from the subfamily of the chirps (Deltocephalinae).

features

The cicadas are 3–4.5 mm long. The three black spots on the front edge of the head and two black bands that run across the field of vision are characteristic of the cicada species. The mostly shortened wings (brachypter) have a metallic sheen. The females have elongated gonoplacs that protrude from the end of the abdomen . The last abdominal segment of the male has dark spots.

Occurrence

The species is native to the western Palearctic (Europe and North Africa). It is widespread in Europe. The cicada species is represented in the British Isles. The species was introduced to North America.

Way of life

The cicadas are found in open grass biotopes, especially with sandy or calcareous soils. The adults fly from June to October. Doratura stylata is most frequently observed from June to mid-July on meadow bluegrass ( Poa pratensis ), the leaves and stems of which the cicadas suckle.
