The thorny earth owl ( Agrotis spinifera , syn .: Agrotis biconica ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).
features
The moths reach a wingspan of 28 to 40 millimeters. The basic color of the forewings mostly shows ocher, sometimes also dark brown tones. The large, very long, thorn-shaped, black cone blemish is typical of the species . Ring and kidney defects are connected by a black line. Some black arrow spots can often be seen in the submarginal region . The upper side of the hind wing is silky white. The antennae are toothed in the male and thread-shaped in the female.
distribution and habitat
The developing areas of the species are in the southern and western areas of Asia and in the south and east of Africa including Madagascar . Evidence from southern Europe can be traced back to migrant butterflies . The preferred habitats are open areas, also near the coast.
Way of life
The Dornmakel-Earth Owl forms continuous generation in the year. The moths are nocturnal and like to come to artificial light sources and bait . The caterpillars feed on various grasses. Further details on the species' way of life have yet to be explored.
