Sleeping Beauty was a beautiful child (in English original: Sleeping Beauty ) is a detective novel by Ross Macdonald from 1973. The German translation is by Günter Eichel .

The novel is about a missing young woman named Lauren. Private detective Archer is supposed to find her because she is suicidal and disappeared with a packet of potentially fatal sleeping pills. What at first looks like a simple search assignment soon becomes difficult after a kidnapping and several deliberate killings. Lew Archer digs deep into the family history and discovers some ugly secrets in the process.
