South Downs, Sussex

Downs (Middle English doun , Old English dūn for hill) are higher areas that are characterized by little or no forest cover due to the mostly dry soil. Instead, grass and heather landscapes with extensive grazing, especially with sheep, can be found. In particular, but not exclusively, the mountain ranges of the southern English chalk formations are named as Downs . The associated type of landscape is called downland . Etymologically, the term is related to the German word Düne .
