history

The turning technique comes from the Turkish turning ritual of the Sufis . Traditionally only men turned. Nowadays men and women shoot in the stage form.

technology

Whirling is now a stage dance. The turning technique on which it is based comes from the turning dervishes (Sufis): They traditionally turn to the left. Even in the modern stage dance form, the rotating dance, people usually still turn to the left. The record in continuous rotation is four hours. According to the Guinness Book of Records , the world record for turning is 3,497 revolutions per hour, set by Nicole McLaren in Zurich on March 7, 2015.
