A rapid drug test is a voluntary procedure that enables the police to confirm an initial suspicion of drug use on the spot, especially during a traffic stop .

The typical procedure for alcohol is a breath test with alcohol test devices and a drug wipe test with taking a saliva or sweat sample to determine a number of other drugs.

The procedure of the drug wipe test introduced in 2003 is burdened with a very high uncertainty averaging 8%. Nevertheless, it is used by the police because it is the only quick-to-read procedure that can be used to test driving under the influence of psychoactive substances without removing body fluids . As with alcohol, positive results must be confirmed with a blood test.

The number of identified users of illegal drugs on the road in Germany rose in the first half of 2004 by 76% to 2,964 compared to the same survey period in 2003.
