You and Your Garden was an advice program that was initially broadcast on GDR television and later on the ORB from 1968 to 2003. The show, devised and moderated by Erika Krause , was one of the most popular television programs in the GDR .

history

According to her own statements, Erika Krause had the idea for the show in early April 1968. In mid-May, she presented the concept to Hans Höschel, who was then head of the agricultural policy department, at the Nalepastraße radio station . After all, the program was initially accepted for a two-year trial period. The first edition of You and Your Garden was recorded on October 5th, 1968 in the allotment garden section "Wiesengrund" in Berlin-Rahnsdorf and broadcast on October 27th, 1968 in the second program of the DFF. Because of the large audience participation, the program received a slot in the first program after just one year from October 1969.

The focus was on gardening as a leisure activity for numerous families in the GDR who owned allotment gardens . In her program, the TV presenter explained to the small and hobby gardener how to properly prepare the garden and how to successfully sow, plant, care for and harvest. She also gave advice and tips and answered letters to the editor. In the first few years you and your garden also gave tips for small animal owners, until they received their own series with you and your pet in 1981 .

After the end of the GDR and German television broadcasting, the broadcast was continued by the ORB from May 28, 1993 and also shown on the MDR . In December 2003, the last of a total of 483 programs in the successful series was broadcast.
