Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane ( Irish Gailearaí Hugh Lane Chathair Bhaile Átha Cliath ), better known as The Hugh Lane Gallery , is a museum in Dublin , Republic of Ireland . Located in the Charlemont House designed by Sir William Chambers , north of Parnell Square, it was originally the town house of James Caulfeild, 1st Earl of Charlemont .

history

Hugh Lane founded the Harcourt Street gallery in 1908 under the name Municipal Gallery of Modern Art - one of the world's first public modern art galleries . Today the official name Dublin City Gallery is The Hugh Lane .

Hugh Lane bequeathed his collection of European art to the National Gallery in London, but shortly before his death in 1915 decreed in an unauthorized codicile that it should remain in Dublin. After years of disputes, it was decided in 1959 to show the 39 paintings alternately in London and Dublin.

The museum now has its own collection and also houses exhibitions by mostly Irish contemporary artists. In 2001 a replica of Francis Bacon's studio was exhibited. From 2004 to May 2006 the museum was closed for renovation. Since it reopened (and until the end of 2006), the entire collection bequeathed by Hugh Lane to the museum has been on display there.
