Ducatone is the first silver coin in Italy with a value of one thaler . The first Ducatone was defeated in Milan in 1551 after an edict by Emperor Charles V. It was minted in Savoy in 1566 and in Venice in 1570 . Ducatone is an abbreviation for it. Ducatone da soldi cento .

A Ducatone has a fine silver content that was 3 grams above the content of the Reichsguldiner . Reichsguldiner were introduced with the Reichsmünzordnung of 1551 and are immediate forerunners of the Reichstaler of the Holy Roman Empire defined in the Reichsmünzordnung of 1566 .

Some Ducatone minted in Milan ( die cutter Leoni) show particularly successful portraits . Philip II also had the coins minted .
