EBML

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

EBML , the Extensible Binary Meta Language ( English for "expandable binary meta language"), formerly Extensible Binary Markup Language , is a generalized file format for all types of data. The goal is a binary equivalent to XML . It provides a simple framework for storing data in XML-like identifiers. However, it is not extensible in the same way as XML, since the document type definition must be known beforehand.

EBML was originally developed for the Matroska audio / video container format . There are other formats that are grouped under the heading Binary XML .
