The Martian meteorite EETA79001

The Martian meteorite EETA79001 (official name Elephant Moraine A79001 ) was discovered in 1979 in the Elephant Moraine in Antarctica . It consists of basaltic lava rock and is classified as shergottite, which means that it has a similar composition to the Martian meteorite shergotty . The mass found is 7.942 kg.

EETA79001 was the first meteorite for which Mars was proven to be the original body in 1983 - by comparing the isotope abundances of argon in glass inclusions with the argon isotope abundances measured by Viking countries in the Martian atmosphere .
