EURO 50

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

EURO-50 is a preliminary study for a large telescope of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) with a planned mirror diameter of 50 meters.

As a result of the specific planning of several mirror telescopes with a primary mirror diameter of more than 20 m, such as the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT, 21 m), the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) and the Large-Aperture Mirror Array (LAMA), the European Southern Observatory decided to do preliminary planning in 2005 for a telescope with a mirror diameter of 50 m.

Together with a preliminary study for a 100 m telescope, the Overwhelmingly Large Telescope (OWL), Euro-50 was postponed in favor of a more rapidly realizable 40 m telescope, the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT).
