Earl Wavell

Earl Wavell was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was created on May 1, 1947 for Field Marshal Archibald Wavell, 1st Viscount Wavell . He was Viceroy of India from 1943 to 1947 .

Along with the dignity of Earl, he was given the subordinate title Viscount Keren , of Eritrea and of Winchester in the County of Southampton . As early as July 22, 1943 he had been promoted to Viscount Wavell , of Cyrenaica and of Winchester in the County of Southampton. Both titles also belonged to the Peerage of the United Kingdom.

The titles expired on the death of his son, the 2nd Earl, on December 24, 1953.
