Earl of Peterborough
Earl of Peterborough was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .
Award and subordinate titles
It was created on March 9, 1628 for John Mordaunt, 5th Baron Mordaunt . As early as 1609 he inherited the subordinate title Baron Mordaunt from his father , which was created in 1529.
On the death of his older son, the 2nd Earl , on June 19, 1697, the Barony of Mordaunt fell to his daughter Mary Howard, wife of Henry Howard, 7th Duke of Norfolk , as 7th Baroness. The earldom was only inheritable in the male line and fell to Charles Mordaunt, 1st Earl of Monmouth , the eldest son of the younger son of the 1st Earl of Peterborough. Already in 1675 he had inherited the titles Viscount Mordaunt , of Avalon in the County of Somerset, and Baron Mordaunt , of Ryegate in the County of Surrey, bestowed on him in 1659, and in 1689 he was made Earl of Monmouth . When Mary Howard died childless in 1705, he also inherited their barony as the 8th baron.
With the childless death of his great-grandson, the 5th Earl of Peterborough, on June 16, 1814, all his titles lapsed, with the exception of the Barony Mordaunt of 1529, which fell to his half-sister, Lady Mary Mordaunt, as the 11th Baroness.
