Eb / N0

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

E b / N 0 is a parameter in digital communication and data transmission that is used in particular when comparing the bit error frequency of different digital modulation methods when the bandwidth is to be neglected. In general, the following applies: the fewer bit errors that are to be tolerated, the greater the E b / N 0 value must be.

E b / N 0 is the ratio of the signal energy per bit to the noise power per 1  Hz and is therefore independent of the bandwidth. It is therefore  to be understood as the normalized signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and is also referred to as the SNR per bit . The unit of E b / N 0 is 1 / bit, usually the value is given in  dB .

Bit error rate (BER) as a function of E b / N 0 for different PSK -Modulationsarten

E b / N 0 is proportional to the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) or to the carrier-to-noise ratio  (CNR or C / N):

In logarithmic form, the formula given by:

E b / N 0 can be viewed as the normalized value of E s / N 0 , the ratio of the energy E s per symbol , to the noise energy :
