Ecco was an Austrian synth-pop duo from Styria , which in 1987 became a one-hit wonder of Austropop with the song Hexen .

Band history

In 1983 Ronnie Herbolzheimer, son of Peter Herbolzheimer , and Klaus Kofler founded the Musikwerkstatt Graz as a composer duo. In 1986 they were commissioned to write a benefit song for the Graz city festival. The Archduke Johann Blues from Styrian all-star project band for Styria became a chart hit. Herbolzheimer and Kofler brought out a joint album as Herbolzheimer Jr. in the same year , in which the singer Wilfried was also involved.

When the state exhibition on the subject of witches and wizards took place at the Riegersburg the following year, Alex Rehak, who had also been involved in the Archduke Johann Blues , had the idea of creating a song for this too. Herbolzheimer and Kofler composed the synthpop song Hexen (sometimes also "Hexen hexen" or "Hexen have called Hexenbesen" according to the refrain) and recorded it under the band name Ecco , the lyrics were contributed by Wilfried. The song was released as a single and entered the Austrian charts at number 23 in June . After that, the song became a huge hit, rising to number one , where it stayed for a month and a half. It was the best-selling song in Austria in 1987.

The duo released two more singles as Ecco , but the project was ended again. The music workshop was still successful after that and wrote two hits for Wilfried with Ikarus and Lisa Mona Lisa , among others .
