Eddie T. Johnson (2016)

Eddie T. Johnson (* 1960/61 in Chicago ) has been the police chief of the Chicago Police Department since 2016 .

Life

Johnson was born in Chicago, and when he was ten, his family moved to neighboring Washington Heights , where he still lives today. He began his career with the Chicago Police Department in 1988. He was named Commander of the 6th Ward in 2008 and Chief of Patrol in 2012.

Former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel endured controversy when he named Johnson Provisional Police President in 2016 because Johnson was not one of the three candidates selected by the Chicago Police Board and Johnson did not apply for the job. Emanuel named Johnson interim police chief on March 28, 2016, April 13, 2016, the day after the Chicago City Council's Public Safety Committee bypassed the Chicago Police Board with an expedited vote, Johnson was officially sworn in as Chicago Police Commissioner, after his appointment was unanimously approved by the Chicago City Council.
