The Educational Testing Service ( ETS ) is a US non-profit company that offers standardized testing procedures in the education sector. Founded in 1947, ETS is today the global market leader in the so-called " test industry ". The company's headquarters are in Lawrence Township , near Princeton, New Jersey . The best-known exams offered by ETS are the English test TOEFL and the study ability test SAT .
ETS develops its standardized test procedures primarily for the USA and carries out international tests in over 180 countries and 9,000 locations around the world, including TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication), GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) General and Subject Tests and The Praxis Series tests. ETS carries out a total of 20 million tests worldwide every year.
In the USA, ETS is highly regarded among academics: Scientists alternate between employment at ETS and university positions, and ETS employees regularly publish in specialist journals such as Psychometrika . However, the company's quasi-monopoly in this area is sometimes criticized.
