Egmont Foundation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Egmont Foundation is the parent company of the Danish media company Egmont , which was founded in 1878 by Egmont Harald Petersen under the name P. Peterson Druckerei . The company is based in Copenhagen and is now a leading media group in Scandinavia.

Foundation, endowment

Shortly before his death, Egmont Harald Petersen converted his company into a foundation, as neither of his children was of legal age, nor was his wife possible for a successor as managing director. The aim of the foundation was to secure the family's financial situation as well as to support charitable causes. Every year Egmont donates € 13 million to improve the lives of children and young people. Since 1920 the foundation has donated more than € 370 million.

Career

When he died, Petersen left behind an ambitious company with 115 employees and a turnover of around 800,000 kroner (equivalent to approx. 38 million kroner today). The company continued to expand, particularly in Scandinavia, and is now the market leader in magazines and journals , with an estimated readership of 5 million in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland.

After the Second World War, the then managing director managed to enter into a cooperation with Walt Disney . This secured the publishing house joint rights to the printing and distribution of the Disney comics . The first Disney comic appeared in Sweden in 1948. In 1951 the subsidiary Ehapa was founded in Germany for this purpose . From the 1980s and 1990s, it expanded to Eastern Europe and Asia. Today the Egmont publishing group is represented in 20 countries.

In 1963 Egmont bought the Danish publishing house Aschehoug , which was in dire straits with the publication of an encyclopedia. This publishing house was followed by others in Scandinavia, so that Egmont is now the market leader in Scandinavia when it comes to book publications. Egmont is also one of the largest publishers in the world of children's books.

Egmont recognized the influence of the film and television medium early on. Therefore, an own advertising agency was founded, which primarily took care of the advertisers for their own magazines and journals. In 1992 it merged with the oldest film studio in the world, Nordisk Film (founded in 1906) and has developed into the largest private film and television production company in Scandinavia

In 2008, the largest Norwegian magazine publisher Hjemmet Mortensen and 50% of Zentropa were taken over.

In the following years, Egmont acquired other companies that accelerated the company's growth and increased the share of digital sales in total sales. Today Egmont is owned by TV 2 Norge (Norway's largest commercial media group), Nordisk Film including 50% of Zentropa (largest Scandinavian film producer and distributor, various computer / mobile game producers, and exclusive distributor for PlayStation ), Egmont Publishing (published more than 700 magazines worldwide and is involved in various leading online retailers and advertising agencies), various book and educational publishers (Lindhardt og Ringhof, Alinea, Alfabeta etc.).
