The Medal of Honor for the 40th anniversary of the German Democratic Republic was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was donated on October 14, 1988 by the Chairman of the State Council of the GDR , Erich Honecker . The medal was a recognition and appreciation of outstanding achievements in the formation and all-round strengthening of the GDR as well as for active participation in shaping the "developed socialist society". The medal itself could be awarded to all citizens of the GDR. The one-time awards ceremony took place on October 7, 1989 as part of the “Day of the Republic”.

Eligibility to make proposals and award practice

The right to propose the award of the medal lay with the central leadership of the party and social organizations, as well as with the ministers and heads of other state organs as well as the leadership of the party in the districts and districts as well as the chairmen of the district councils. The proposals were to be sent to the Cadre Department at the GDR Council of Ministers by June 15, 1989 . Appearance and wearing style

The gold-plated medal with a diameter of 30 mm shows the state coat of arms of the GDR all over on its obverse . The reverse of the medal shows the five-line inscription: FÜR / MERDIENSTE / UM DIE DEUTSCHE / DEMOKRATISCHE / REPUBLIK . The medal was worn on the upper left side of the chest on a red covered clasp, on the middle of which a small gold clasp with the inscription: 1949-1989 was placed. The interim brace was of the same quality.
