The German name Eibisch (Middle High German ībesch (e) , Old High German ībisca ) was borrowed from Latin (h) ibīscum , which in turn comes from Celtic. The further origin is unclear, in the other Indo-European language groups - i.e. outside of Celtic, Latin-Romanic and Germanic - this plant name is not represented.
