Oak from Zsennye

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Zsennye Oak was a tree veteran in Vas County in western Hungary . The pedunculate oak stood until 2006 and was considered the oldest tree in Hungary .

The tree stood about 1500 meters east of the center of the community Zsennye [ʒɛnɲɛ] on a silted-up arm of the Raab . It formed part of the former alluvial forest to which seven other old oaks also belong nearby.

The oak is also known as the millennial oak . Their national reverence, although the exact age has not been determined, was believed to have existed as early as the time of King Stephen . In the last few decades the oak had largely died, only on the northern part of the trunk there was a leafy branch.

In 1958 it was declared a protected tree, its hollow spaces were poured out with concrete, and the branch was temporarily held together with a tire. The employees of the Őrség National Park pulled three saplings from the acorns of the oak. One of them will likely be placed next to the ruined stump of the ancient tree. In spring 2006 the tree was destroyed in a storm.

On a Pro Natura - commemorative coin the image of the millennial oak is used.
