The Eichholzmaar is one of the smaller maars in the Vulkaneifel and is located on the country road between Steffeln and Duppach . It has a diameter of approx. 120 m. The greatest depth is 3 m.

The circular shape of the maar basin is still clearly visible. It lies exactly on a geological fault that runs northwest / southeast here.

At the beginning of the last century the maar was drained in order to preserve meadows. From late summer 2007 to spring 2008, a renaturation was carried out and the water surface with a size of approx. 1.1 hectares was restored. In just a few years, the maar has developed into a refuge for rare water birds and reptiles.

Two mineral springs can be found in the immediate vicinity: The “Steffelner Drees” mineral spring ( ) is located about 300 m upstream to the west of the Eichholzmaar . The mineral spring "Aueler Drees" ( ) is located about 270 m downstream of the Eichholzmaar to the east .

Extensive investigations of the Eichholzmaar have taken place with the scientific support of the universities of Jena and Frankfurt.

The depth of the maar funnel is estimated to be around 25 to 35 m. In the maar sediments, volcanic sediments from the Laacher See eruption 12,500 years ago were found at a depth of approx. 12 m.

Visitors to the maar can take part in the regular Wednesday tours of the local Eifel Association from April to October. The Eichholzmaar lies on the volcano path that leads from Jünkerath via Steffeln / Duppach to Gerolstein.
